1. What is an average reading speed? My reading speed is only 190 words per minute.

Our research shows that the average adult reading speed in South Africa is 200 words per minute.

2. Is it true that when you read faster you understand less and forget more quickly?

No. If you read faster without training, you will understand less. However, with training, high levels of comprehension and retention are possible.

3. Why do some people read faster than others without any training?

The speed we read at depends on many factors, including: how we were taught, how much reading we do, the type of reading we primarily do . . . and many more.

4. What is the ideal programme length?

Two consecutive days training. This way you will not lose the momentum of the process. There are some theories that speed reading can be taught in a morning and other theories of three hour sessions once a week, for up to eight weeks. From our 30 years of experience, we know that these theories do not offer optimum results.

5. How can reading fast be natural when so many people read relatively slowly?

‘Natural’ or ‘normal’ is the way we were taught to read. When you are able to read faster it then becomes natural to read at that pace.

6. I love reading stories and poetry and I enjoy doing so at a leisurely pace. Surely it doesn’t make sense to read those things quickly?

Being an effective reader allows you to adjust your speed to suit the material you are reading. It gives you the flexibility to read fast or slow depending on your need and preference.

7. Can everyone who can read, learn how to speed read?

Yes!

We recommend that adults attend the Effective Reading for Business programme that will increase reading efficiency in order to process business documents and e-mails with high comprehension, as well as research and study effectively.

We suggest that scholars (over the age of 12) and university students attend the Effective Reading and Studying for Students programme. This programme focuses on not only increasing reading efficiency, but effective studying techniques as well.

8. How much faster do people read after attending the Effective Reading for Business programme?

It varies from person to person. A normal improvement would be around three times your initial starting speed. However, reading fast without understanding is of little value to anyone. We measure your reading efficiency in two categories: speed and comprehension. You will then know how to apply this reading efficiency in all areas of your work and leisure reading.

9. How will reading faster help me?

This will depend on you. There are obvious advantages in keeping up-to-date with your daily reading, staying in touch with developments in your chosen area of expertise, dealing with documents, reports and e-mails.

10. Who are the programme trainers?

All of our facilitators are trained by The Learning Revolution (Pty) Ltd. They all use speed reading techniques themselves.

11. Will the programme teach me everything I need to know or will I need further training and support?

As with any skill, you will continue to improve after the programme if you apply the reading techniques that you have learnt. However, having completed the Effective Reading for Business programme, you become a “Learning Revolutionary for Life”. This entitles you to ongoing support that includes: e-mail correspondence with speed tests, repeating the programme, or parts of the programme, at no additional cost to you.

12. How can I tell whether this course is the right one for me?

This programme is suitable for anyone who wants or needs to read faster. Most people attending the programme are absolutely amazed at the simplicity of the methods . . . and their effectiveness. If you would like to talk to someone about your particular requirements, contact us on (011) 467-0015.

13. Where is the programme run?

Our training centre is based in Lonehill, Johannesburg where we run ‘open’ programmes once a month. Of course, we are also happy to arrange ‘in-house’ training; that way you choose the venue and the dates.

The History of Speed Reading
The need for speed or rapid reading can be traced to the early 1900’s, when the information explosion swamped readers with more than they could possibly handle at their existing reading rates . . . more
